Methodist Mountain Mission
The Methodist Mountain Mission has been serving the people of eastern Kentucky since 1943. It operates eight opportunity stores in Kentucky that located in Barbourville, Irvine, Harlan, Hazard, Jackson, Pineville, West Liberty, and Burkesville. Each store provides used clothing and household items at a reasonable price.
Mt. Zion United Methodist Church accepts donations of gently used furniture, household items, and clothing which are boxed and shipped to the Methodist Mountain Mission in Jackson, Kentucky. Volunteers prepare these items for shipment and loading onto a Methodist Mountain Mission truck.
Items may be dropped off at the church during office hours. After hours donations may be dropped off at the church or the picnic pavilion. The availability of the picnic pavilion for dropping off donations may be restricted by church events or weather. We cannot accept the donation of televisions, computer monitors, and books.
Henderson Settlement began as an outreach of the Rev. Hiram Frakes to the of Laurel Fork Valley. The work began with the establishment of small school, which grew over the years to an enrollment of over 500 students, and a residential childcare home. Since then, the mission of Henderson Settlement has grown to include thrift stores, agricultural instruction, community services, youth ministry, a senior center, new mother support, and a craft shop.
In previous years, a team travelled from Mt. Zion Church to spend a week at Henderson Settlement to do home refurbishing and volunteer support to other aspects of Henderson Settlement's mission. Last year the team chose to sponsor the shipment of Christmas gifts in support of Henderson's annual Community Christmas outreach. Henderson Settlement recently named Mt. Zion Church as one its "covenant partners."
